Planning to Remember...

It’s surprising how much memory is built around things unnoticed at the time.

In late December, I put together a homemade weekly planner for my mom. I added old and new family photos and red-lettered the birthdays of her parents, siblings, children and grandchildren.

Since the first of January, she's written several lines, every day. She notes the weather, her bowling results, visits from the cable company tech, and family news.

Photographs provide us with the sharp, clear edges of what we did, where we went, and what was said. When time, like watercolor, softens those edges and the colors begin to blend,

the little things we noticed enough to write down, are what we remember with affection.
